Social work clients
Under Minnesota Statutes, section 148E.195, if your provider is a licensed social worker, you have the right to:
- Be told your social worker’s license status, education, training, and experience
- Examine the public data the Board of Social Work keeps about your social worker
- Report a complaint about your social worker’s practice to the Board of Social Work
- Know how to contact the Board

Alcohol and drug counseling clients: Client Bill of Rights
Under Minnesota Statutes, section 148F.165, clients of alcohol and drug counseling have the right to:
- Expect that the provider has met the minimum qualifications of training and experience required by state law
- Examine public records maintained by the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy that contain the credentials of the provider
- Report complaints to the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy
- Be informed of the cost of professional services before receiving the services
- Privacy, as defined and limited by rule and law
- Be free from being the object of unlawful discrimination while receiving counseling services
- Have access to your records as provided by law, except as otherwise provided by law
- Be free from exploitation for the benefit or advantage of the provider
- Terminate services at any time, except as otherwise provided by law or court order
- Know the intended recipients of your assessment results
- Withdraw consent to release assessment results, unless this right is prohibited by law or court order or was waived by prior written agreement
- A description of the general nature of the assessment process in language you understand
- An explanation and interpretation of your assessment results in language you understand, unless this right is prohibited by law or court order or was waived by prior written agreement
