When the past doesn’t stay in the past
Trauma can come from a single event, like an accident, an assault, or a sudden loss. It can also build slowly, through years of feeling unsafe, unseen, or on guard. Either way, it often leaves its mark long after the moment has passed.
You might notice:
- Memories, nightmares, or flashbacks that arrive without warning
- Feeling jumpy, on edge, or unable to fully relax
- Avoiding people, places, or conversations that bring it back
- Numbness, shame, or a sense of being disconnected from yourself
- Trouble sleeping, focusing, or trusting others
- Using alcohol or other substances to take the edge off
These are common, understandable responses to overwhelming experiences. They are not a sign that something is wrong with you.
How trauma-informed therapy helps
Trauma-informed care starts with safety and choice. You decide what to share and when. We go at a pace that feels manageable, and we build skills for steadiness before we approach anything painful.
Our work together may include:
- Grounding and coping skills to help your body and mind settle when old alarms go off
- Understanding your responses so they make sense instead of feeling like a personal failing
- Processing difficult memories in a structured way so they lose some of their power
- Rebuilding trust, confidence, and connection in your relationships and in yourself
Approaches we may use
Every plan is individualized. Depending on your needs and preferences, trauma work at Healing Harbor may draw on:
- Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a structured approach that uses guided eye movements and does not require you to describe every detail of what happened
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to work with the thoughts and beliefs trauma can leave behind
- DBT-informed skills for managing intense emotions and distress
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to move toward what matters to you, even when hard feelings are present
- Nature-based interventions that use the calming effect of the outdoors
When trauma and substance use overlap
Many people who have lived through trauma also struggle with alcohol or other substances. Healing Harbor works with both at the same time, so you don’t have to choose which part of your story to bring. Learn more about addiction and recovery support.
In person in Duluth or by telehealth
You can meet in person at our Duluth office or by secure video from anywhere in Minnesota. Some people prefer to start from the comfort of home. Others find it easier to talk in a calm room away from daily reminders. Either is welcome.
